1. I didn’t exactly read that Green quote as saying all fashion exhibitions lacked scholarship. But that some tend to cater to the lowest common denominator. But that’s true of a lot of painting/sculpture/photography/mixed-media/etc shows too. The best exhibitions teach us something new and make us look at the art in question in a new way. I am often frustrated with the Costume Institute’s shows at the Met because they often are shallow — and NOT because the clothes or the fashions displayed in them are shallow. Exhibitions should treat the fashions they display as art, and frankly not all of them do (I am thinking of the Costume Institute’s recent exhibitions, particularly the “Model as Muse” show). The best exhibitions show a respect for the art they showcase as well as for the audience and tries to enlighten us.
